The IRS is back on track to send balance due notices.

Staff shortages related to COVID-19 caused the IRS to suspend the sending of these notices on May 9, 2020, while other notices continued going out. “The mail backlog is now caught up enough to account for the timely mailed payments,” IRS said, adding that in late Oct. or early Nov., taxpayers with balances due will begin receiving the updated 500 series notices, alerting taxpayers to varying stages of nonpayment.

The CP501 notice informs taxpayers that a balance is due and lists payment options. The CP503 warns of a possible tax lien if taxes remain unpaid, and the CP504 informs recipients their state income tax refunds may be levied.
