The IRS has updated its guidance on what taxpayers should do if they need a lien release or discharge certificate.

In a Q&A posted on its website, the IRS has updated its guidance on what taxpayers should do if they need a lien release or discharge certificate (“lien certificate”) and announced that it’s now processing mailed lien certificate applications.

In April 2020, the IRS had stopped processing mailed applications for lien certificates. The IRS recommends that taxpayers use the IRS’s eFax line (844-201-8382) for its Advisory Consolidated Receipts (ACR) site to request a lien certificate for a release of a federal tax lien; a discharge of a federal tax lien; the withdrawal of a federal tax lien; and the subordination of a federal tax lien.
