Working at the polls has tax consequences.

Election workers are generally employed by state and local governments. The earnings of election officials and election workers paid less than $1,900 in 2020 are generally exempt from Social Security and Medicare (FICA) tax.

It’s important to note, however, the income is subject to federal income tax. The amounts are considered employee compensation and must be reported on workers’ tax returns.
