The COVID-19-related scam tells unwary taxpayers that they qualify for a $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. Here’s how the scam works: Taxpayers get a text which states they’ve “received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept the payment.” The recipient is then directed to a fake link that appears genuine, where they are asked to enter their personal information. The information is then captured by thieves. The IRS reminds taxpayers that it doesn’t send unsolicited texts or emails. If you receive such a text, here’s what the IRS recommends:
