The IRS is warning taxpayers of a scam targeting those with limited English proficiency.

People who aren’t comfortable with the English language are especially vulnerable to a phone scam, which is why it made the IRS “Dirty Dozen” list of 2020’s worst scams.

These calls may be made by robocall (recorded message) or by a live person. The scammers often try to make the calls seem genuine by showing they have bits of the victim’s personal information, such as a portion of his or her Social Security number. Scammers may threaten the victim with jail, deportation, or loss of driver’s license.

What should victims do? The IRS advises recipients to ignore the threats and hang up.
